03 Hayes Shop
‘Toitin’ McGrath was the original owners of Hayes Shop – so called because he smoked cigarettes all day and ‘toitin’ is the Irish for cigarette. The “McGrath” name is still over the original shop.
Patrick and Bridget Hayes were living in Doonbeg in 1901. By 1911 Bridget was a widow and her son had left for America.
c1920 Daniel M. Hayes returned from America and he moved into McGrath’s and continued with the shop. Hayes shop that you see today was built in 1969. It sold everything from cured bacon to nuts and bolts, blankets, shoes etc. Sean Hayes took over the shop from his father and today, his son Padraig now runs the shop.
