01 O’Donnell Shop

This is the first stop on the Doonbeg Heritage Trail.

Jackie O’Donnell came from the neighbouring townland of Clohanes (near Doonbeg Golf Course), and the shop was opened c1900.

O’Donnell’s shop was a general grocery shop and closed in 2005/2006. Doonbeg village was a thriving commercial centre with 2 drapery shops, a tailor’s and 8 other smaller shops. The only means of transport was the West Clare Railway or donkey/pony and trap. There were no cars, so people had to shop locally.
