12 Doonbeg Mill

This is the last remains of the Doonbeg Mill. A mill would have channelled the power of the water to grind grain into flour.

The Doonbeg Mill was built on the bank on the river by the two Copeland brothers, who were the local landlords at the time. Landlords owned all the land, which they inherited, in Doonbeg’s case, from Scottish Protestants recorded as being here since the 1400s. When Studdert took over the Copeland estate they stopped the use of the mill. The Studdert family continued to own the estate until c1960 when the Land Commission took it over.

Later the mill was converted into an RIC barrack (police station). The barrack was abandoned during the Irish War of Independence (1921) and subsequently burnt to the ground.

Question

Can you see where there is a run in the river?
