14 Post Office

In the late 1800s the Doonbeg Post Office was run by the Considine’s, one of the oldest families in Doonbeg. Thomas and Mary Considine were listed in the 1901 census as “Postmaster” and “Assistant Postmistress”.

Their daughter Mary “Post Office Assistant” married John Clarke (RIC) c1920 and so it became “Clarke’s Post Office”. Their daughter Peggy married Joe Blake (from Killard) and it became “Blake’s Post Office”. Their son, Gerard Blake, is the current postman for Doonbeg.

Peggy managed the telephone exchange in the Post Office and there was a telephone box in the post office. This was the only telephone in the parish. All conversations could be heard by Peggy so nothing was private!

In the 1950s John Bradley drove the mail car with post from Ennis back to Doonbeg. John was also an electrician and in 1958, as part of the Rural Electrification Scheme, he wired all the Doonbeg households for electricity.

Sadly, in 2018 the post office closed and all post is now sorted in Kilrush.

The following were the Post Men:

  • Martin Neylon (Caherfeenick)
  • Michael Dillon (Rhynagonnaught)
  • Mickie Ryan (Mount Rivers)
  • William Learnihan (Newtown)
