Fair Green today

17 Fair Green

The Fair Green is nicely positioned in the centre of the village.

In 1837, it is recorded as being used to hold Fairs on February 8th, May 2nd, July 26th, Oct. 8th, and Dec. 16th, for general farming stock, and for flannel (a type of material). A lot of cattle traders would come to these fairs and the census of 1901 and 1911 showed cattle dealers recorded as lodgers in some households.

Across from the Fair Green there used to be a field which up until the 1960s was used as a loading area for cattle on fair days.

It was said after the fair day shopkeepers bills and rates would be paid.

In the 1970s the Fair Green was a playground for the local children with swings.

Question

Can you guess how many swings fitted in here and where they might have been positioned?
