05 Old Doonbeg Pump

Before there were taps in houses, the well was the only source of fresh water in the village. Water was drawn from the well using buckets lowered down on a string. A pump was then installed by the council to ease the collection, however, the water still had to be brought back to the houses.

Women used to have a roll of cloth on the tops of their heads to carry their buckets of water.
