Poll an tSagairt
27 Poll an tSagairt
Poll an tSagairt is the Irish for “the priest’s hole”.
The following story was written by a Doonbeg school child over 100 years ago:
“One night the priest got a sick call up in Killard. A woman that was dying had no way of travelling but by horse and saddle. When the priest was turning the ‘ingir’ (bend in the river) the horse reared up and put himself and the priest into the water and they drowned. That story is about 200 years old but ever since the place is called ‘Poll a tSagairt’ and sometimes a light is seen there at midnight”.
Locals also say if you look closely into the deepest part of the ‘ingir’ you can see the priest’s face looking back at you.
