John O’Gorman

16 John O’Gorman & Doonbeg GAA

This corner is known locally as “Boland’s Corner” as Boland’s shop once stood here. It was also the home of John O’Gorman (1919 – 2005) who was a founding member of the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association. A creamery is a place where farmers brought milk to be sold. He was the first National Vice-Chairman of the Association, which was established following a meeting in Nenagh on July 8, 1950. Incredibly, John O’Gorman cycled to that meeting in Nenagh, Co Tipperary with a neighbour. They left home at 4am on the day of the meeting, returning the following morning at 4am.

John O’Gorman was also one of the founding members of Doonbeg GAA Club, founded in 1954.

Doonbeg GAA is the second most successful Gaelic football club in the history of the Clare Senior Football Championship having won 18 county titles. Doonbeg’s football team is known as “The Magpies” as a result of the black and white shirts which are traditionally worn.

David Tubridy (see info 21) is a famous Clare footballer; he earned the top scorer title in National Football League with a total of 478 points in 2021. The Doonbeg Football Ground (Shanahan McNamara Memorial grounds) can be found on the Kilkee Road.

Another famous Doonbeg sportsman is Olympian Pat McDonald (1878–1954) who won gold medals in the 1912 Swedish Olympics and the 1920 Amsterdam Olympics in the ‘shot put’ event. A monument dedicated to his achievements can be found at the White Strand, Killard.
